Who is an associate?

One of the comments I’ve received after writing the “Knowledge or recipes” post was an interesting observation: “maybe the associate-level students need more recipes than knowledge”. I somewhat agreed with that thought, but still wanted to sort out the definition of an “associate” (English is not my native language, so I have no “natural” presumptions about certain concepts). My research turned out some interesting associate-level details.
